A complete, pre-fertilised growing medium formulated specifically for culinary and aromatic herbs — blending peat, worm castings, Mediterranean pine bark humus, and green vegetable compost into a substrate that simultaneously provides sufficient moisture at the roots, excellent drainage, and natural nutrition lasting up to 6 months. Simply pot and grow.

Ingredients and Their Roles

Dr.Soil Natural Herbs Substrate is built from four organic components, each chosen for a specific function in the herb-growing environment:

  • Peat — the moisture foundation of the substrate. Peat holds water in its fibrous structure and releases it gradually as the herb’s roots require it, ensuring the root zone never dries out completely between waterings whilst remaining well-aerated. It also provides the slightly acidic environment that supports the wide range of herb species this substrate is designed for.
  • Worm castings (biohumus) — the biological and nutritional engine. Worm castings contribute an active microbial community, plant growth hormones (auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins), humic and fulvic acids, and immediately plant-available nutrients — all in a form that cannot burn even the most sensitive young herb roots. The slow-release mucus matrix of the castings meters nutrition progressively over weeks and months.
  • Mediterranean pine bark humus — structure, drainage, and natural immunity. The fine composted pine bark creates the open, well-draining physical structure that prevents waterlogging, whilst its natural tannins provide antimicrobial protection against soil-borne pathogens. It contributes organic matter and cation exchange capacity to hold nutrients in the root zone.
  • Green vegetable compost — long-term fertility and soil biology. The compost provides the humus foundation that sustains microbial diversity over the full growing season, contributing a broad spectrum of macro and micronutrients released progressively as the soil food web processes the organic matter.

Together, these four ingredients create a pre-charged nutritional environment that requires no additional fertilisation for up to 6 months after potting.

Designed For: Culinary and Aromatic Herbs

Dr.Soil Natural Herbs Substrate is formulated for all culinary and aromatic herbs grown in containers, pots, and windowsill planters: basil, rosemary, thyme, parsley, dill, mint, lemon balm, sage, tarragon, chives, coriander, oregano, marjoram, and all similar species.

The Specific Needs of Aromatic Herbs

Aromatic herbs have a more precise set of growing requirements than most popular container plants, and most standard potting composts fail to meet all of them simultaneously:

  • Consistent moisture without waterlogging — herbs need water available at the roots at all times, but they are highly sensitive to saturated conditions. The most common cause of herb death in containers is not drought but overwatering in a substrate that drains too slowly. Dr.Soil Herbs Substrate is formulated to hold sufficient moisture whilst maintaining excellent drainage — a balance that generic multipurpose compost rarely achieves.
  • Natural, gentle nutrition — aromatic herbs produce their flavour and fragrance compounds (essential oils) most intensely when grown in a nutritionally balanced, naturally fertilised environment. Excessive soluble nitrogen from synthetic fertilisers promotes rapid leafy growth at the expense of the essential oil content that makes herbs worth growing. The slow-release organic nutrition of this substrate supports steady, flavourful growth rather than the rapid, insipid growth associated with synthetic feeding.
  • Natural immunity and structural integrity — herbs grown in biologically active, organically managed substrates develop stronger cell walls, better pest and disease resistance, and more robust root systems than those grown in sterile or chemically fertilised media.

How Dr.Soil Herbs Substrate Addresses These Needs

The peat provides the moisture reservoir that prevents drought stress between waterings. The pine bark humus creates the drainage channels that prevent waterlogging and provide root aeration. The worm castings supply the biological activity and gentle slow-release nutrition that supports essential oil production without pushing excessive vegetative growth. The green compost provides the humic foundation that gives the substrate its long-term fertility and structural stability. Each ingredient addresses a specific need; together they create the complete environment that aromatic herbs require.

How to Use

Dr.Soil Natural Herbs Substrate is ready to use directly from the bag — no additional fertiliser, soil conditioner, or amendment is required.

Step Action
1. Choose the container Select a pot with adequate drainage holes. For most culinary herbs, a pot of at least 10–15 cm diameter is recommended. Ensure drainage holes are clear and unobstructed.
2. Add a drainage layer Place a small layer of grit, expanded clay, or small stones at the base of the pot to improve drainage and prevent the substrate from blocking the drainage holes.
3. Fill and plant Add a layer of substrate and prepare a planting hole. Remove the herb from its original pot, gently loosen any circling roots, and place in the new container. Fill around the root ball with substrate and press gently and evenly around the plant.
4. Water in Water gently and moderately immediately after planting. Allow the water to drain fully. Avoid waterlogging at this stage.
5. First 7 days Allow 7 days before watering again as normal. The substrate retains sufficient moisture for the root system to begin establishing without additional watering in most conditions.
Ongoing Water when the surface of the substrate feels dry to the touch. No fertiliser is required for 6 months. After 6 months, supplement with a balanced organic liquid fertiliser during the active growing season.

When Is It Best to Use?

Spring is the primary potting season for herbs — as temperatures rise and day length increases, herbs move into active growth and will establish rapidly in fresh substrate. Potting up in March to May ensures plants are well-established before the peak harvesting season of summer.

Year-round for indoor herbs. Windowsill herb gardens can be established at any time of year in a heated indoor environment. Dr.Soil Herbs Substrate provides the complete nutritional and structural environment for successful indoor herb growing without any supplementary inputs for the first 6 months.

After harvest stress. Herbs that have been heavily harvested, repotted frequently, or showing signs of nutritional depletion benefit from being moved into fresh substrate at the beginning of the growing season. The worm castings’ growth hormones and microbial inoculants accelerate recovery and re-establishment.
